Hello Local 52,
It's time to send out another bargaining update.
Our Collective Agreement (CA) expired on March 31st 2018. For those who may be wondering, the current CA remains in effect (see Article 56.01).
Since my last message on March 1st, the Bargaining Committee has reviewed the results of our survey. The team would like to thank all those who participated and provided their thoughts. The response was amazing – we had just over 1,000 responses (almost double the responses from our last bargaining survey three years ago). You provided us with a lot of great information that helps us ensure that we’re headed in the right direction.
Your Bargaining Committee has had four days of bargaining with the employer to date – April 23rd & 24th, and May 28th & 29th. The Union presented the employer with a full proposal on April 23rd (indicating which articles we wanted to review, make changes to, or leave alone). You will find more detailed information below regarding our initial proposal, the Employer’s proposals, and the progress that has been made so far. You will see which articles of the Collective Agreement have been “opened” for negotiation, as well as those that remained “closed” (i.e. no changes). Some articles have been “signed off as amended”, which means that the Union and the employer have come to an agreement on proposed changes. You will not see details of any proposals while we are in negotiations, only the current status of the articles.
Remember that the negotiations will continue until an agreement is signed and ratified by both parties: the University and you, the membership.

Your Bargaining Committee has also proposed a number of new articles and Letters of Understanding that are not numbered as of yet. Once they are ‘signed off’, I will list them with the proposed new number for the Collective Agreement.
As you may have noticed, many of the articles in the CA have been opened. That may be partially due to changes in legislation (both provincially and federally) that require changes to the CA. We hope to continue to make progress in the next meetings with the employer, and I will be sending out updates after each bargaining session so you will have up to date information as we move forward.
